이 논문의 목적은 베드로전서 4장 1-6절의 심도 있는 주해를 통해 그리스도인의 고난의 이유, 목적, 결과 등을 이해하는 것이다. 복잡한 주해적, 신학적 쟁점들은 베드로전서 4장 1-6절의 절별 주해를 하는 가운데 논의되었다. 베드로는 1절에서 고난 받거나 핍박받는 그리스도인들에게 그리스도의 마음으로 무장할 것을 권면한다. 이 권면을 위하여 베드로는 두 가지 타당한 이유를 제공한다. 하나는 그리스도께서 우리에게 모범을 보이셨다는 것이고 다른 하나는 그리스도께서 죄를 끊으셨다는 것이다. 그 고난의 목적은 2절에서 기술되었듯이 하나님의 뜻대로 살기 위함이다. 3절과 4절에서 베드로는 그리스도인들이 이전에 빠져 있었던 비그리스도인들의 세상적 삶의 방식을 구체적으로 묘사한다. 이 세상에 속한 사람들이 그리스도인들의 새롭게 바뀐 삶의 방식으로 인해 그들을 학대하고 저주할지라도 그리스도인들은 그리스도 안에서 그들의 새로운 삶의 방식을 지켜야 한다. 물론 이 세상에서 믿음을 지키기는 어렵지만 5절과 6절이 드러내듯이 그리스도인들은 마지막 심판에서의 소망을 보며 이 세상의 모든 장벽들을 극복할 수 있다. 요약하면 베드로전서 4장 1-6절은 이 세상 사람들과 분리되어 살지 않고 함께 살아가지만 마지막 심판의 소망을 보며 하나님의 뜻을 위해 고난 받으며 살아가는 그리스도인들을 위한 변치 않는 격려의 본문이다.

The aim of this article is to grasp the reason, purpose, and consequence of Christians` suffering by conducting a thorough exegesis on 1 Peter 4:1-6. Intricate exegetical and theological issues in 1 Peter 4:1-6 were disentangled in the exegesis of each verse of 1 Peter 4:1-6. In verse 1, Peter exhorts the Gentile Christians who are suffering or being persecuted to arm themselves with the mind of Christ. For this exhortation, he provides two legitimate reasons: Christ showed us the example and He had ceased from sin. The purpose of suffering is to live by the will of God as stated in verse 2. In verses 3-4, he describes specific worldly life-styles of non-Christians in which Christians were before involved. Even though people in this world mistreat and curse them due to their changed new life style, Christians should keep their new way of life in Christ. Without doubt it is difficult keep faith living in this world. However, as verses 5-6 reveal, they can overcome all the walls of this world when they see the hope in the final judgment. In sum, 1 Peter 4:1-6 is a timeless encouragement for Christian who are not living by themselves separately but living mixed with the people of the world suffering for the will of God, seeing the hope for them in the final judgment.
